[Poems] Seeing off 2021 Summer

Time flies.

Being filled with ever-present COVID-19 warnings, unexpectedly short rainy season and endurable tropical summer nights together with the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, the summer of 2021 is about to leave.

산에 나무가 많아도
물이 없으면
아무도 살 수 없네.

[새도, 벌레도, 물고기도, 사람도 ……]

Without valley stream,
thick wood in the mountain
couldn’t stay any longer

[with birds, insects, fish and even human beings].

 

This summer, I guessed which part of the long journey of life I'm walking along. It must be after the halfway point and gradually near to the finish line of a marathon race. 

So I remember and murmur the lines of The Journey written by Mary Oliver.[1]

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting their bad advice
though the whole house
began to tremble and you
felt the old tug at your ankles.
"Mend my life!" each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.

어느날 당신은 마침내 깨달았습니다.
무엇을 해야 할지, 그리고 시작했습니다.
당신을 둘러싸고 있던 목소리들은
불길한 충고를 했고
온 집안이 둘썩이고
오랜 습관이 발목을 잡고
모든 사람들이 저마다
"인생 똑바로 해" 소리쳤지만
당신은 멈추지 않았습니다.

You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations, though
their melancholy was terrible.
It was already late enough
and a wild night,and the road full
of fallen branches and stones.

당신은 무엇을 해야 할지 알아냈습니다.
거센 바람이
갈기를 곧추세우고
주춧돌을 흔들어도
그들의 슬픔이 너무 컸기 때문이지요.
때늦은 스산한 밤
부러진 가지와 돌멩이가

But little by little, as you left
their voices behind, the stars began
to burn through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice which
you slowly recognized as your own,
that kept you company as you strode
deeper and deeper into the world,
determined to do the only thing
you could do determined to save
the only life you could save.

그러나 아우성치는 목소리를
조금씩 뒤로하고
구름을 뚫고 별이 빛날 무렵
새로운 목소리가 들려왔습니다.
그것은 서서히 당신 목소리임을 알게 되었지요.
세상 속으로 점점 더 깊이
사람들과 무리지어 걸어갈 때
당신이 할 수 있는 오직 한 가지를 결행하고
당신이 구할 수 있는 오직 한 생명을

One day when it was so hot and humid in mid-summer, I happened to see a movie Midway (2019) at home.

This war film was directed and co-produced by Roland Emmerich with a relatively low cost of 100 million dollars.  The battle of Midway took place in summer of 1942 right after the half successful retaliation-oriented Doolittle Raid of Tokyo and other major cities in Japan in April 1942.[3] The unbelievable U.S. Navy's victory in the Battle of Midway over the invincible Imperial Japanese Navy, which dared to occupy the small Midway Island west of Hawaii Islands, changed the direction of war in the Pacific Theater.  

 

As this documentary-like movie illustrated vividly, in a highly critical battle over who dominates the Central Pacific Ocean, a fatal mistake made by the leadership could bring about the unexpectedly catastrophic result.[4]

Likewise, we are now staging an invisible war against coronavirus. Such kind of decision making in the government leadership would possibly change the fate of the nation.

In the summer holiday season, I was longing for a vacation in the countryside.

All of a sudden, I found out my companion pet called "Petit" was in a serious condition.

The vet who did the ultrasound diagnosis of my 14-year old doggie said that Petit could not see the same flowers next summer. As a matter of fact, I noticed that Petit did not like to walk outdoors as before, and became gradually slow-moving.

In this regard, a poem "When I'm 70 Years Old" ("인생 칠십이면") reminded me of the last days of life. Actually, we are of the same age in terms of dog's years which run five or six times faster than the human age.

인생 칠십이면 가히 천심이로다
세상사 모질고
인생사 거칠어도
내 품 안에 떠가는 구름들아
누구를 탓하고 무엇을 탐하리오

마지막 눈 감으면
영혼의 날개 달고 단숨에 닿는 그곳
누가 하늘을 멀다고 하는가

When I'm 70 years old, I'll have the mind of heaven.
Tho' mundane matters are tough;
Tho' personal affairs are rough;
Clouds are flying away from my bosom.
How can you blame whom and covet what?
Tho' it seems remote;
Tho' it is far away;
When I close my last eyes,
I'll be there at once with the wings of ghost.
Who can say the heaven is far. far away?

바람이 서늘도 하여 뜰 앞에 나섰더니
서산머리에 하늘은 구름을 벗어나고
산뜻한 초사흘 달[5]이 별과 함께 나오더라
달은 넘어가고 별만 서로 반짝인다
저 별은 뉘별이며 내 별 또 어느 게요
잠자코 홀로 서서 별을 헤어보노라

Cool wind has guided me to the front yard.
The sky over western hills seems to be out of clouds.
A new moon of the fourth day appears with stars.
After the moon set, only stars are twinkling.
I wonder whose star is that one, and what’s my star.
Standing alone in silence, I’m counting the stars.

 

On August 22, 2021, a famous composer of children's songs, Lee Soo-in, passed away. The above Korean lyric song "Star (별, 노래 강혜정)" composed by Lee, the Sijo-style lyrics of which were written by Garam Lee Byung-ki, is frequently sung or requested by Korean people around this time of the year. Another lyric song "The River in My Heart" (내 맘의 강물, 노래 김재형) is also a favorite song of Korean young people who once experienced a broken heart.

생명은 오고 가지만

산과 들은 늘 같은 모습

While living things come and go,

Mountains and rivers will remain intact.

 

In the early August, we worried when the scorching and humid days are over. Now we feel cooler breeze early in the morning and evening than before.

We know the limitedness of life. All living things return to Mother Nature sooner or later. 

Then we come to a conclusion about the time-honored maxim "Carpe diem" (있을 때 잘해).

1] 미국의 퓰리처상 수상 여류시인 매리 올리버 (1935-2019)의 "여행"은 1986년에 출간된 <Dream Work>에 수록되어 있다. 우리나라에서도 널리 번역 소개되어 있는데, 번역 및 의미 전달의 편의상 세 연으로 나누고 마지막 단락은 필자가 새로 번역하였다.

 

2] 랄프 에머슨이 그의 시 "What is Success?"에서 읊었던 "자신이 한 때 이곳에 살았음으로 해서/ 단 한사람의 인생이라도 편해지는 것/ 이것이 진정한 성공입니다."(To know even one life has breathed easier/ because you have lived;/ This is to have succeeded.)를 연상케 하는 구절이다. 

 

3] 1942년 4월 18일 미군 J. 둘리틀 준장의 지휘하에 미 항공모함 호네트 호에서 출격한 B-25 폭격기 16대가 일본 도쿄, 요코하마, 가와사키, 나고야, 고베 등 주요 도시를 폭격(Doolittle Raid)한 사건을 말한다. 일본 측 피해는 크지 않았으나 日王이 사는 도쿄의 황거까지 위협을 받음에 따라 일본 해군 수뇌부는 육군을 설득해 미드웨이 섬을 점령하고자 했다. 영화 Pearl Harbor (2001)에서 알렉 볼드윈이 진주만 공격의 복수를 주장하는 둘리틀 중령 역으로 나온다. 그 당시 연료가 떨어진 미군 조종사들이 비상착륙했던 중국 지역에서는 일본군의 무차별 보복으로 28만여 명의 양민이 학살을 당했다고 한다.

 

4] 일본 태평양함대가 1942년 4월 미 폭격기의 도쿄 공습 재연을 방지하고 태평양을 장악하기 위해 하와이 제도 서쪽의 작은 섬 미드웨이를 공략할 예정이었다. 일본 함대가 상륙부대를 이끌고 미드웨이 섬으로 향할 때 진주만 피습으로 전력이 손상된 미 태평양함대를 이끄는 니미츠 제독은 차근차근 반격을 준비했다. 1942년 5월 말부터 6월 초에 걸쳐 일본 함대의 위치와 진행방향을 탐지한 후 뇌격기와 급강하 폭격기들을 총동원해 이들에게 파상적인 공격을 감행했다.

그런데 일본 해군의 나구모 사령관과 지휘부는 미드웨이 상륙과 미 함대 격퇴의 두 마리 토끼를 쫓는 작전을 고수했다. 그 결과 미군 폭격기들의 내습을 보고 받은 나구모 사령관은 미드웨이섬을 폭격하려던 폭탄 대신 미 함정을 공격할 수 있는 어뢰로 바꾸어 장착하라고 명령했다. 참모가 시간이 부족하다고 말했으나, 완벽주의자인 사령관은 서두르라고만 재촉할 뿐 의견을 굽히지 않았다. 바로 그 한 시간 여의 공백을 틈타 미군 폭격기들은 일본 제로센 요격기와 함대의 고사포망을 뚫고 일본 항공모함을 향해 급강하 폭격을 감행했던 것이다. 초반에 일본 해군은 선방하였으나 시간이 지날 수록 해군수뇌부가 판단 미스로 우왕좌왕하는 사이에 미군 폭격기의 공격을 받아 주력 항모 3척과 야마토 전함이 격침되고 말았다.

미드웨이 해전에 참가했던 양측의 평가는 크게 달랐다. 미국은 '행운'이었다고 말했으나 일본 측은 '제국해군 괴멸의 시작'이라고 자평했다. 패전의 책임을 진 나구모 중장은 전쟁이 끝날 때까지 계속 중책을 맡았다. 진주만 공격을 진두지휘했던 야마모토 이소로쿠(山本五十六, 부친이 56세에 득남) 연합함대 해군장관은 1943년 4월 남태평양 전선 시찰 도중 그의 탑승기가 격추되는 바람에 전사했다. 정보전에서 앞섰던 미군에 야마모토 대장의 솔로몬 제도 순시 동선이 노출되었던 탓이다. 미드웨이 해전에 관한 상세한 해설은 NAVER 팟캐스트 전쟁사: 미드웨이 해전(1942) 1~3 참조
