[이민] 미국 사회에서 한국이민자의 역할

미국에서 형님 장례식을 지켜보면서 몇 가지 의문이 생겼다.

미국에 한국인 이민이 도착한 것은 1903년 하와이 사탕수수, 파인애플 농장에 노동자로 온 것이 효시라고 한다.

하와이는 일제 압박을 피해 도산 안창호가 와서 정신개조 독립운동을 한 곳으로도 유명하다.[1]   

그로부터 120년이 지난 후 미국 사회에서 한국계 이민자의 수는 220만 명에 이른다.

그래서 아래의 질문을 챗GPT에게 던져 보기로 했다.

1. 평균적인 미국인의 관점에서 한국 이민자는 세계 각국에서 온 이민자들로 구성된 미국 사회에서 무슨 역할 또는 얼마나 중요한 역할을 해온 것으로 평가되고 있을까? 

2. 이민자의 국적으로 볼 때 한국계 이민자 수는 몇 번째인가? 미국 사회에서 저명인사가 된 한국 이민자를 10명만 꼽는다면? 

3. 유럽계 이민자의 경우와 비교하여 한국계 이민자들은 무엇을 해야 미국 주류사회에는 편입될 수 있으며, 그것은 언제쯤일까?

예를 들면, 한국에서 이민온 사람들은 남다른 근면성과 기업가정신으로 수많은 음식점과 그로서리, 소매점 등 소기업을 시작하고 많은 일자리를 창출하는 등 미국 경제에 공헌하였으며 한국의 독특한 문화와 음식, 음악, 전통을 살려 미국 사회를 풍성하게 만들었다. 최근에는 K팝, K드라마 등 대중문화에 있어서도 많은 팬을 두고 있다. 또한 한국의 이민자들은 교육에도 열성이어서 과학, 기술, 엔지니어링, 수학(STEM), 의약 기타 학문 분야에서도 두각을 나타냈다. 한국 이민자들은 한인 지역사회를 통해 한국의 문화를 선양하는 한편 다른 이민자들을 돕고 있다. 

요컨대 한국계 이민자들은 미국의 경제발전과 문화적 다양성, 사회적 구성에 기여함으로써 미국의 역사와 발전에 상당한 역할을 했다고 평가된다.

미국 이민자의 국적별로 보면 한국계는 숫적으로 아주 적은 그룹에 속하나 상당한 존재감을 나타낸다. 2019년 현재 미 이민정책원(MPI) 통계에 의하면 미국내 한인 이민자는 약 190만명으로 전체 이민자의 4.6%를 차지하였다.

한국의 이민자나 그 후손으로 여러 분야에서 괄목할 만한 성취를 이룬 사람은 새미 리(올림픽 다이빙 금메달리스트), 안젤라 안(안 트리오의 바이올리니스트) , 데이빗 장(뉴욕의 모모푸쿠 누들바 스타셰프), 다니엘 김(로스트, 하와이 5-0수사대 등 출연 배우), 수전 안 커디(도산 안창호 장녀, 미 해군 최초의 여성 포병장교), 리처드 김(잃어버린 이름의 저자), 산드라 오(그레이 아나토미 시리즈의 출연 배우), 클로에 김(올림픽 스노우보드 금메달리스트), 폴 윤(원스 더 쇼어 문학상 수상작가), 장진숙 장도원(포에버21의 창업자) 등을 꼽을 수 있다.[2]

1. Education: Korean immigrants place a high value on education, and many have pursued higher education in the United States, which has helped them to gain access to better jobs and opportunities.
2. English Language Proficiency: Many Korean immigrants have worked hard to learn English, which is crucial for communication, education, and employment in the United States.

As for when Korean immigrants will fully move into the mainstream of American society, it is difficult to predict. 19세기 말과 20세기 초에 미국으로 대거 이민을 온 유럽인들에 비해 한국의 이민자들은 미국의 주류사회에 진입하는데 많은 어려움을 겪었다. 그 중요한 요인은 그 수가 상대적으로 적다는 것과 최근 들어서야 이민을 오기 시작했다는 점이다.

한국의 이민자들이 미국 사회에 동화하기 위해서는 고등교육, 영어의 숙달, 한인 지역사회의 지원, 미국 문화에의 적응 노력이 필요하다고 본다.

한국 이민자들이 미 주류사회에 언제쯤 진입할 것인지 예측하기는 어렵지만 미국에서 다음 세대가 더 많이 태어나고 자라면서 미국 사회로의 통합이 촉진되고 그에 기여하는 바 역시 확대될 것이다.

1] 일제 하의 민족지도자 도산 안창호 선생은 왜 호를 '섬뫼'(島山)로 지었을까? 그가 일본에서 배를 타고 하와이로 갈 때 멀리서 바라다보이는 하와이 섬들을 보고 "망망대해 위의 섬에 솟아있는 산"이라는 의미의 호를 지었다고 한다. 실제로 그는 흥사단(興士團)이라는 단체를 설립하고 민족개조 운동을 벌였다.
