[전시회] Over the fence (담장 밖으로)

When I was told there will be an exhibition of collaborative works between an artist and a florist, I guessed one of the followings (그림작가와 가능한 플로리스트의 콜라보): 

• Wedding hall-like floral decorations in an exhibition hall (결혼식장 같은 꽃장식); 

• Flower arrangement describing a still-life painting or vice versa (정물화의 꽃그림을 묘사한 꽃장식); or

• Independent flower show addressing the theme of paintings on display (전시된 그림과 동일 주제의 플라워 쇼).

 

* 외국의 어느 도시에 온 듯한 강남 가로수길의 거리 풍경

* 이길이구 갤러리 (서울시 강남대로 158길35 가로수길)

You can see the exhibition at issue, "OVER THE FENCE",[1] at 2GIL29 Gallery, Garosugil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul from February 9 to 26, 2022. Open 10AM - 7PM and closed on Sunday, Monday and holidays.

As you may know, small streets inside the Garosugil district look like bustling exotic places being full of unexpected excitement.

 

* 콜라보 작품 전시가 1층과 지하에서 열리고 있는 이길이구 갤러리의 입구

* 전시된 그림에서 받은 영감을 천진난만한 아이의 눈높이에서 갈대숲, 마른꽃, 모래, 조약돌로 표현했다.

* 어린아이의 눈에는 바닷가의 갈대숲 우거진 사구와 해변에 밀려오는 파도 속에 색색깔의 조약돌이 날아다닐 것이다.

* 코로나로 학교도 제대로 가지 못한 어린이들의 시각(박지은 작가의 그림)에서 무지개 꽃 같은 전시작품을 구상했다.

At the entrance of 2GIL29 Gallery, you are required to check your COVID-19 vaccination records, and find yourself in a childlike innocent environment as if you are on a beach.

Then you are going downstairs in a quite different atmosphere. It's because there is a hanging garden (공중정원), which we have never seen before in Korea.

Of the Seven Wonders (세계 7대 불가사의), there was the Hanging Gardens which was constructed by Nebuchadnezzar II at Babylon (바벨론 느부갓네살 왕의 공중정원).

 

* 갤러리의 B1 전시장에 가서 보면 넓은 공간이 무엇인가로 꽉 찬 느낌이 든다.

* 넓은 전시공간에서 장서원 작가는 사방에 전시된 그림들과 이미지나 느낌이 매치되는 '공중정원'을 구상했다고 한다.

* 아무도 생각치 못한, 꽃과 나무가 공중에 매달린 공중정원은 사잇길로 걸으며 사방에 걸려있는 그림을 볼 수 있다.

Beyond our expectation, there are plenty of plants, branches, artificial flowers, leaves, etc. hanging beneath the ceiling. Yes, there are big-sized pictures which give considerable impression to the hanging garden on display.

 

* 공중정원의 소품 하나하나를 아이의 눈으로 바라보면 또다른 세계가 펼쳐진다.

While lookng around the exhibits on the 1st floor and the basement, I felt like they are almost same as the flowers mentioned by poet Kim Chun-soo in his "Flower"(김춘수, "꽃").[2]

Originally, there was beauty in their existence. Through the eyes of children, they have made an appearance in a very simple and innocent way like these verses:

 

Before I called her name,
she was nothing
more than a gesture.

 

When I called her name,
she came to me
and became a flower.

 

* 장서원 작가가 구상한 공중정원은 만일 AR VR기기로 바라보면 메타버스 안에 별세계가 펼쳐질 것이라고 한다.

At the side wall of the B1 exhibition hall, a beam projector showed colorful photos of plants processed by special coating skills. All right, if you have an AR/VR device, you can see parts of a virtual garden in the Metaverse.[3]

Within an hour of stay at two exhibition halls, there occurred an answer to the first question.

 

* 플로리스트 장세원(오른쪽)은 박지은 회화작가와 함께 아이의 시선으로 상상의 세계를 표현하고자 했다.

* 이번 전시회에서는 어린아이의 시선으로 메타버스에 꾸밀 수 있는 가상정원을 그려볼 수 있다고 한다.

My next question is how visitors are informed of this kind of exhibition.

The answer is quite simple. The information including various comments of customers comes from Instagram, etc. 

It is said that SNS power is mightier that the print advertisement.

1] "담장 밖으로"란 제목으로 열리는 이번 전시회의 기획의도는 '회화와 식물의 협업을 통해' 코로나 팬데믹 이후 좁아진 우리의 생활반경을 넘어 사회가 규정한 답답한 틀 속에서 빠져나온다는 것이다. 그리하여 세상과 예술에 잠재하는 여러 경계를 구속 없이 넘나드는 자유로움을 만끽하는 예술적 장을 추구하고자 하였다.

"담장 밖으로"란 구절은 성경 창세기 49장에서 야곱이 죽음을 앞두고 이집트 총리인 요셉을 '담장 밖으로 뻗은 포도 나뭇가지'라며 축복하는 말에도 등장한다. 요셉은 시기심에서 그를 죽이려 했던 형제들과 그들의 가족을 구원하고 이집트 고센 땅에서 이스라엘 민족의 시원이 되도록 지원을 아끼지 않았다. 

"Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine near a spring, whose branches climb over a [fence]." (Genesis 49:22)

 

2] 김춘수의 시 "꽃"의 전문은 다음과 같다.

내가 그의 이름을 불러 주기 전에는/ 그는 다만/ 하나의 몸짓에 지나지 않았다

내가 그의 이름을 불러 주었을 때/ 그는 나에게로 와서/ 꽃이 되었다

내가 그의 이름을 불러 준 것처럼/ 나의 이 빛깔과 향기에 알맞은/ 누가 나의 이름을 불러다오/ 그에게로 가서 나도/ 그의 꽃이 되고 싶다

우리들은 모두/ 무엇이 되고 싶다/ 너는 나에게 나는 너에게/ 잊혀지지 않는 하나의 눈짓이 되고 싶다

 

3] 장서원 작가는 B1 공중정원의 작품 의도를 다음과 같이 설명했다.

"지금 시대를 살아가는 세대들은 우리가 상상하는 것 이상으로 디지털에 친숙한 세대일 것이다. 어쩌면 그들은 메타버스 속에서 교육을 받고, 친구들을 만나 문화생활을 하는 것이 더 익숙한 세대이다. 디지털 플라워를 통해 그들이 디지털 속에서 보게 될 세상을 만들어보고 싶었다. 아이들을 이해하려면 아이들의 눈높이에서 세상이 어떻게 변화하는지 바라보아야 했고, 결국 최신 기술과 친숙해야 그들과 소통할 수 있지 않을까 라는 생각이 들었다. 그들과 소통하는 방법에 대한 메시지를 지하 1층에 담았다. 특히 지하의 디지털 아트는 패션위크 2021 S/S 서울패션위크 오프닝 곡을 만든 크레용 뮤지션과 협업을 하여 진행했다. B1 전시장에서는 그의 디지털 음원을 BGM으로 들을 수 있다."
