[Essay] On a bright Autumn Day in October

It's the third day of October, the National Foundation Day when Dan-gun Wanggeom founded Gojoseon in BC2333 according to Samguk Yusa. Though it falls on Sunday in 2021, Korean citizens expect tomorrow is a substitute holiday making a long weekend holiday in the early October.

 

Truly, it was fine and warm. The autumnal sunrays heated the air up to 30 degree. We had a clear blue sky. Fortunately, various autumn flowers - cosmos, wild chrysanthemum, silver grass, etc. - were in full bloom in the country side.

 

Everyday we can hear a song, "On a wonderful day in October" (시월의 어느 멋진 날에) sung by various musicians.

Originally, it was Secret Garden's instrumental music "Serenade to Spring." A famous baritone Kim Dong-gyu arranged the spring song into an autumn song with beautiful lyrics.[1] It is allegedly the most popular celebration song at the wedding ceremonies across the nation this season. On October 3, Onnuri Church celebrated its 36th anniversary. The sunday service was observed as the Thanksgiving Day service right after Chuseok holidays.

Pastor Lee Jae-hoon reminded the congregation and online watchers of the time-honored facts:

* the Onnuri spirit is the Kingdom Pioneer (Acts 11:19-26)[2];

* the Church is preoccupied withe the worldwide missionary works;

* the Church leadership regards its 'sending capacity' first rather than its 'seating capacity'[3];

* the Church operation is oriented to its own community and indifferent to ethnic background of members; and

* the next decade of Onnuri Church depends on how effectively it tackes with the problems generating out of the current corona pandemic.

On the last day of the autumn holidays, 007 No Time to Die film attracted my family to a Megabox theater.

It is said to be the final series of Daniel Craig as 007 agent with a license to kill. The 163-minute movie was interesting and thrilling enough to follow the complex story line.

The last scene showed the sacrifice of James Bond to secure the safety of his beloved wife Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) and his little daughter. In a sense, it was a really touching closing for Korean audiences.

1] "Serenade to Spring"은 노르웨이 출신 피아니스트 로브란드와 아일랜드계 바이올리니스트 셸리로 구성된 시크릿 가든이 1995년 데뷔 앨범에 수록한 연주곡이었다. 이태리에서 성악을 하면서 이 멜로디를 익히 알고 있었던 바리톤 김동규는 2001년 가정적으로 어려움을 겪고 있던 차에 시점을 가을로 옮기고 분위기도 사랑이 넘치는 가사를 붙여서 노래하기 시작했다. 그는 결혼식장에서 축가를 부르게 된 후배 성악가들로부터 많은 감사(?) 인사를 받게 되었다고 말했다.

 

2] Kingdom Pioneer 즉 '하나님의 나라 개척자'란 스데판의 순교 이후 핍박을 받게 된 예루살렘 교회의 교인들이 이곳저곳으로 흩어지면서 전에 없던 방식으로 복음을 전파한 것을 이르는 말이다. 그들은 유대인들 뿐만 아니라 헬라인을 비롯한 이방사람들에게도 복음을 전하여 안디옥 교회를 중심으로 바울이 그리스와 로마로 진출할 수 있게 도왔다.

 

3] 온누리교회의 창립자 하용조 목사는 교회의 능력은 등록교인을 얼마나 늘리느냐(seating capacity)보다 선교사를 얼마나 많이 파송할 수 있느냐(sending capacity)에 달려있다고 말했다. 이러한 목회철학에 따라 교인들은 자신이 직접 선교사로 나가지 못하면 선교사를 후원하는 일에 열성을 보이고 있다.
