[회갑여행] 하와이 - Sight seeing

2015년 1월 회갑을 맞은 아내

요즘은 환갑잔치 벌이는 사람 없다며

자식들과 함께 가는 해외여행을 바라는 눈치.

My wife turned sixty in January 2015.
She said that no one celebrates these days.
But she wants to travel abroad with two sons.

아직 흰머리도 없는 엄마이지만

장가 안 간 아들들이 하와이행 비행기표를 구해 왔다.

손주를 안겨드릴 자신 없으니

해외 관광과 쇼핑으로 달래줄 모양. . .

She doesn't have gray hair yet,
but her sons, stil single, have bought plane tickets to Hawaii.
They are not sure she'll have a grandchildr for a while.

So she had better to go sightseeing and shopping . . .

 

 

와이키키 해변에는 

우리 같은 관광객과

해수욕을 즐기는 사람들.

On Waikiki Beach, so many tourists like us,
and sun and/or ocean bathers are deployed.

 

 

오아후 섬을 일주하기 위해 처음 들른 Kailua Beach에는

에머럴드 바다 위로 스치는 산들바람과

시간에 쫓기지 않는 해수욕객들뿐

우리도 바닷물에 몸을 담그고 한참 머물렀다.

Kailua Beach, our first stop on our circumnavigation of 
the island of Oahu, is home to the the breeze lapping
at the Emerald Ocean, and unhurried bathers.
We took a dip and stayed for a while.

 

   

Makapuu Point에서 절경을 배경으로 사진도 찍고

영화 <주라기 공원>에서 공룡들이 뛰놀았던 Kualoa Ranch도 가보고

동양인 이주노동자들의 한이 서린 China Man's Hat 섬도 보면서

North Shore로 달려갔다.

We snapped photos of the view from Makapuu Point,
Kualoa Ranch, where dinosaurs roamed in the movie Jurassic Park,
and China Man's Hat Island, where Asian migrant laborers used to live.
Then we drove to the North Shore.

높은 파도가 밀려오는 North Shore에는

아직 철이 이른 탓인지

서핑하는 사람은 없고 파도 구경하러 온 사람들뿐.

파인애플 농장 지대를 관통하여 일로 남하하니

하와이의 또 다른 명물 Wikele Premium 아웃렛.

North Shore, with its high waves, was still a bit crowded.
It was still early in the season. 
There were no surfers, just people watching the waves.
We drove south through pineapple plantation farms
to Wikele Premium Outlet, another Hawaiian specialty.

 

   

옛날 왕족들이 즐겼다는 Hanauma Bay에서 스노클링을 하며

산호초 사이에서 열대어들과 함께 헤엄을 치니 비가 와도 상관없네.

해변 백사장에서는 빨간머리 새가 낯선 이들을 반겨준다.

we didn't mind the rain as we swam with tropical fish among the coral reefs.
On the white sands of the beach, red-headed birds greeted strangers.

 

   

진주만을 뒤덮었던 포연과 전시의 긴장감은 사라지고

오래 된 평화를 일깨우려는 듯 

군함과 잠수함, 어뢰, 로켓이 박제되어 전시되어 있다.

마지막으로 선셋 크루즈를 즐긴 후

그 이튿날 공항가는 길에 렌트카를 반납하면 

마침내 하와이와 작별해야 하는 순간이 찾아온다.

The tension of wartime belligerence that surrounded Pearl Harbor is gone.
As if to rekindle an old peace,  warships, submarines,

torpedoes, and rockets are on display.
Finally, we will enjoy a sunset cruise.
The next day, after returning the rental car on our way to the airport,
it's the time to say goodbye to Hawaii.
