[Lecture] DG Forum Meeting of Value (2)

We've swept the heaven of Western Art with a telescope focused on Nude.

Next, how about turning to Poetry?

Here is one of Shakespear's Sonnets.

As you may know Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets published in his ‘quarto’ in 1609, covering themes such as the passage of time, mortality, love, beauty, infidelity, and jealousy.[1]

Sonnet 66 [2]

Tir'd with all these, for restful death I cry,

As, to behold desert a beggar born,[3]

And needy nothing trimm'd in jollity,

And purest faith unhappily forsworn,[3]

And gilded honour shamefully misplac'd,

And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,

And right perfection wrongfully disgrac'd,[3]

And strength by limping sway disabled,

And art made tongue-tied by authority,[3]

And folly, doctor-like, controlling skill,

And simple truth miscall’d simplicity,

And captive good attending captain ill.[3]

Tir’d with all these, from these would I be gone,

Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

The poet lived in the Golden Age under the reign of Queen Elizabeth of England.

To our surprise, the poet complains at that time just like us at present.

In the mundane world, such absurdity, stupidity and irregularity prevail regardless of the elapse of time.

Then, where can we find hope for the next generation?

The poet advised his readers and common people never to succumb to the mounting despair arising out of this mundane world. Instead, he encourages them to save and protect their love for a better world.

Don't worry, be happy! It's because:[4]

Shakespeare's Sonnet No.66 survives for more than four hundred years and proves truth and justice alive in spite of such absurdity and irregularity.

I'd like to borrow the explanation about the sonnet from Wikipedia.

A sonnet is a poetic form that originated in the poetry composed at the Court of Palermo, Sicily. The 13th-century poet Giacomo da Lentini is credited with the sonnet's invention, and the Sicilian School of poets who surrounded him then spread the form to the mainland. By the 13th century it signified a poem of fourteen lines that followed a strict rhyme scheme and structure. The sonnet became the "choice mode of expressing romantic love". So the form was taken up in many other European language areas and eventually any subject was considered acceptable for writers of sonnets. Impatience with the set form resulted in many variations over the centuries, including abandonment of the quatorzain (14행시) limit and even of rhyme altogether in modern times.

Let me make an analysis of the above sonnet in a more convenient way.[5]

1] See the list of all sonnets of Shakespeare here.

The first 126 of Shakespeare’s sonnets are addressed to a young man, and the last 28 addressed to a woman – a mysterious ‘dark lady’.

2] Sonnet 66 in modern English

1   Exhausted with the following things I cry out for releasing death:

2   for example, seeing a deserving person who has been born into poverty; and

3   an undeserving one dressed in the finest clothes; and

4   someone who shows trustworthiness wretchedly betrayed; and

5   public honour shamefully bestowed on the unfit; and

6   unblemished goodness forced into bad ways; and

7   genuine perfection unjustly disgraced; and

8   conviction crippled by corruption; and

9   skill suppressed by those with the power to do it; and

10  stupidity restraining the advance of knowledge; and

11  simple truth being dismissed as simplistic; and

12  good taking orders from evil.

13  Exhausted with all these things I want to escape,

14  except that by dying I would be abandoning my love.
