[Sermon] Strategy for Unification - German case

On Sunday, June 10, 2018, German pastor Dr. Werner Kratschel gave a sermon to Yangje onnuri congregation under the title of "Love your enemies"(원수를 사랑하라).

Dr. Kratschel introduced himself as a brave young pastor, succeeding the 500-year long family priesthood, when he was voluntarily dispatched to East Germany. He served for the East German churches including PanKow Kirche for 28 years.

Dr. Kratschel was a witness how a small group of candlelight vigil participants became an insurmountable force for the unification of Germany. At first, they gathered in Nikolai Church at Leipzig every Monday, and declared it as a non-violence prayer meeting. Outside the church, however, there remained a high chance of Tiananmen-solution which mobilizes military tanks. 

 

All that they could do inside the church was to pray for a peaceful solution. In order to deviate from existing fear or 'Angst', they had only to pray with:

i) candlelight,

ii) singing a medley of songs like "Allow us peace, Lord"* repeatedly, and

iii) smile with an enemy-loving mind.

크레첼 박사에 의하면, 베를린 장벽이 무너지고 동서독이 통일이 되기까지 그 사이의 짧은 기간 동안 교회에 중요한 역할이 맡겨졌는데, 그것은 나라의 안정과 비폭력을 유지하는 것이었다. 특히 독재 정권이 무너지면 다음 세 가지 위험이 따른다고 말했다.

첫째, 공산당 지도자들이 분노에 찬 국민들 손에 넘겨질 수 있다. 교회의 임무는 이러한 복수를 미연에 방지하는 것이다. 실제로 동독의 호테커 수상 부부는 베를린 장벽 붕괴 후 두 달간 동베를린 어느 목사관에 피신해 있었다.

둘째, 과거의 권력자들이 쿠데타를 통해 과거 권력을 회복시키고, 국가의 민주주의 발전을 파괴할 우려가 있다.

셋째, 정치적 공백 상태에서 약탈, 경쟁집단 간의 충돌 등 다양한 영역에서의 혼란이 벌어질 수 있다.

 

크레첼 박사는 이러한 위험은 교회가 중심이 된 '원탁회의'를 통해 피할 수 있었다고 말했다. 국가의 중요한 문제에 대하여 모든 교회들이 일치하고 있음을 보여주기 위해 원탁회의는 복음주의, 가톨릭과 감리교회 목회자들이 주관하여 소기의 성과를 거둘 수 있었다고 한다.
