Controlling mind (마음 다스리기/誠諭心) is increasingly important these days when ordinary people used to lose their footing like this:
* Road rage : In June 2015, a man in Gimje was arrested after allegedly driving with another man on his car bonnet, who was claiming his careless driving on the road.
* Dispute with noisy neighbors : It is not surprising in Korea that noise from next door or upstairs usually causes disputes with neighbors], sometimes leading to an unexpected manslaughter incident.
* Extravagant shopping : In July 2015, a woman in Pocheon, who had been indulged in shopping spree for years, was indicted by the prosecutor on charges of intentional killing of her husband and mother-in-law to obtain insurance money up to one billion won.
* Sexual harassment on campus : In April 2015, a prominent mathematician was expelled from Seoul National University on charges of habitual sexual harassment|sexual harassment of his students.
* Nut rage incident : In December 2014 at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, Heather Cho (Korean name Cho Hyun-ah) ordered the aircraft to taxi back to the airport's gate before takeoff, after she was dissatisfied with the way a flight attendant served her nuts on the plane. The arrogant way of life of the heir-daughter of the Korean Air Group has been described as "Superior Arrogance" (Gapjil, 갑질) in the workplace.
Caution
So far road rage, dispute with neighbors, sexual harassment, etc. took place almost every day. But the situation has drastically changed because of digital devices which capture the audio and video evidence.[1]
The real scenes of road rage may be recorded by CCTV cameras (called "black box" cameras in Korea) equipped in every vehicle. Any violence or words harassing sexually subordinates are recorded by smartphones anytime and anywhere. Out of doubt, such evidence would be submitted to the court or mass media or disseminated via social networking services (SNS), and the perpetrators cannot but admit it.
Good words to bear in mind
Here is enlightenment sentences, other than the religious scriptures,[2] written by a Chinese gentleman, who advises us to control our mind.
These are the quotations from the ''Exemplar for Controlling Mind'' (명심보감/銘心寶鑑 紫虛元君 誠諭心文). For detailed contents like "Happiness comes from thrift life", see the KoreanLII article.
