[Maxim] 좌우명으로 삼을 만한 금언

A maxim (금언/金言) or an aphorism (경구/警句) is good witty words to remember and to practice in our daily life.

Generally speaking, it is of moral and educative nature, while a proverb is called the wisdom of the streets.

For example, a maxim "A debate cannot beat the enemy" is more straightforward and educative than a proverb, "A few words can discharge huge debt" (말 한 마디로 천 냥 빚을 갚는다).

 

In the West, a number of maxims derive from the Bible. For example,

It is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction
in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life
God has given them - for this is their lot.

사람이 하나님께서 그에게 주신 바 그 일평생에 먹고 마시며 해 아래에서 하는
모든 수고 중에서 낙을 보는 것이 선하고 아름다우니 그것이 그의 몫이로다. 전도서 5:18.

 

Sometimes it is useful to break the ice at the tough negotiation table.

1. 따져서 이길 수는 없다.

  * A debate cannot beat one's enemy.

 

2. 사랑이라는 이름으로도 잔소리는 용서가 안 된다.

  * Nagging cannot be excused in the name of love.

 

3. 좋은 말만 한다고 해서 좋은 사람이라고 평가받는 것은 아니다.

  * Every good word cannot make him a good person.

 

4. 말에는 자기 최면 효과가 있다.

  * Every word has a self-hypnotizing effect.

 

5. '툭'한다고 다 호박 떨어지는 소리는 아니다.

  * Every bell does not sound the salvation.

 

6. 유머에 목숨을 걸지 말라.

  * Humor is not a matter of life and death.

 

7. 반드시 답변을 들어야 한다고 생각하면 화를 자초한다.

  * Persistent demand of reply often derail the conversation.

 

8. 상대편은 내가 아니므로 나처럼 되라고 말하지 말라. 지록위마(指鹿爲馬)

  * Don't describe a deer as I say a horse.

 

9. 설명이 부족한 것 같을 때쯤 해서 말을 멈춰라.

  * Insufficient explanation may be supplemented by silence.

 

10. 앞에서 할 수 없는 말은 뒤에서도 하지 말라.

  * If you don't talk in front of him, never say any more at his back.
