[Year-end] Poems of Spiritual Enlightenment

As the end of Year 2018 is approaching, I have a lot of things in my mind - feeling emptiness and expecting a new year spirit. 

Yes, 2019 is the year of the golden pig (기해년/己亥年 exactly as from February 4, 2019).

 

The year-end sunset reminds me
of humility of joyful days.

세밑에 지는 해는
즐거운 휴일도 
겸손히 맞으라 하네

Two poems as cited below have come to my mind with enlightenment.

One is for being humble, and another with a sigh of resignation.

성탄절의 기도 / 진장춘

 

주여
지난 날 헛되이 보낸
성탄절을 용서하시고
올해는 성탄의 의미를 바로 새기게 하소서
왕궁이 아닌 누추한 말구유에
임하신 까닭을 알게 하소서
가난한 목동의 인사를
먼저 받으신 의미를 깨닫게 하소서

Oh, Lord,
Forgive me in the past 
I spent most of Christmas Days meaninglessly.
This year let me understand the real Christmas.
Why you came to Earth
Not in the palace but in a humble trough,
Why you were greeted
First by poor shepherds.

 

인류의 죄를 십자가로 보속하기 위해
가장 낮고 누추한 곳으로 오신 예수님
영광이 아닌 가난과 고통을 받으러 오신 예수님
저도 당신과 함께 낮은 곳으로 임하게 하소서

Christ came to a low and humble place
To redeem our sins on the Holy Cross.
Christ was ready to get poverty and pains rather than glory.
Let me be with you in a low and humble place.

 

헛된 욕망을 비우고
가난한 마음이 되어
아기 예수님 모실 정결한 말구유 하나 마련하게 하소서
비움과 나눔과 겸허한 마음으로
기쁘게 아기 예수님을 맞이하게 하소서
어려운 이웃 속에서
예수님을 만나게 하소서

Let me empty out vain desire
And become poor minded.
I'd like to prepare a room clean enough to accommodate Christ Child.
With an empty, ready-to-share and humble mind,
Let me welcome 
Christ Child with delight.
Among miserable neighborhood,
I want to meet Jesus Christ.

 

오소서 아기 예수님!
내 마음에 오소서
간절히 비오니 예수님을 닮아가게 하소서

Oh, come to us Christ Child!
Come into my mind
So that I may earnestly take after Christ.

나도 그랬듯이 / 조병화

 

머지않아 그 날이 오려니
먼저 한마디 하는 말이
세상만사 그저 가는 바람이려니
그렇게 생각해다오
내가 그랬듯이

Before long the day will come.
At first, one word says
Everything in the world is just like a wind.
You may think of it
As I did it.

 

실로 머지않아 너와 내가 그렇게
작별을 할 것이려니
너도 나도 그저 한세상 바람에 불려가는 뜬구름이려니.
그렇게 생각을 해다오
내가 그랬듯이

Really before long, you and I
Will depart this life as such.
So you and I will be like drifting clouds in the sky.
You may think of it
As I did it.

 

순간만이라도 얼마나 고마웠던가
그 많은 아름답고 슬펐던 말들을 어찌 잊으리
그 많은 뜨겁고도 쓸쓸하던 가슴들을 어찌 잊으리
아, 그 많은 행복하면서도 외로웠던 날들을 어찌 잊으리

The moment how thankful I was!
How can I forget so many words, beautiful and sorrowful?
How can I forget so many hearts, warm and lonesome?
Ah, how can I forget so many days, happy and solitary?

 

허나, 머지않아 이별을 할 그날이 오려니
그저 세상만사 들꽃을 스쳐 지나가는
바람이라고, 생각을 해 다오

But, before long the day of departure will come.
Everything in the world as if passing by wild flowers,
You may think of it just like a wind.

 

행복하고도 쓸쓸하던 이 세상을
내가 그렇게 했듯이

In this world which was happy but lonesome,
As I did it.
